About Weight Loss Surgery
Weight loss surgery encompasses several procedures that aim to treat severe obesity, improve cardiovascular health, and alleviate discomfort from weight-related conditions. Obesity is the abnormal accumulation of fatty tissue in the body, and it has grown into an epidemic and often requires lifelong treatment.
Patients tend to gain weight when their caloric intake exceeds the energy expended; however, different genetic, cultural, and societal factors can complicate obesity, and it is heritable. (1) No matter where someone is in their weight loss journey, our team of board-certified bariatric surgeons is the best in Mexico and can help each patient achieve their goals.
Benefits
Weight loss surgery offers many benefits, including:
- Significant Weight Loss: Patients often lose a significant amount of weight after their procedure, which has great health benefits.
- Improved Quality of Life: Many individuals report improvements in mobility, enhanced wellness, and more.
- Reduced Cardiovascular Risk: Losing weight can reduce the risk of developing certain weight-related conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and more.
- Enhanced Self-Esteem: Patients often find that their self-confidence and self-image improve after achieving their weight loss goals.
- Lower Overall Healthcare Costs: A successful weight loss surgery is generally a one-time expense, as opposed to the monthly costs other methods bring.
Ideal Candidates
The ideal candidates for weight loss surgery include obese patients who have been unsuccessful in trying to lose weight through dieting or regular exercise, as well as those who need to lose a significant amount of weight to achieve a healthy weight or BMI. Individuals suffering from weight-related conditions, such as diabetes or high cholesterol, may also make suitable candidates.
All candidates interested in weight loss surgery should be in otherwise good overall health and keep realistic expectations as to what these procedures can accomplish. All patients should be ready to make lasting changes to their lifestyle and diet. Patients should also be nonsmokers or willing to quit before their procedure and throughout their recovery.

You will receive a set of pre-operative instructions during your consultation. You may need to undergo lab testing and imaging studies to ensure you are healthy enough for your procedure. The use of blood-thinning medications and supplements must cease, as well as the consumption of alcohol before and after the procedure. If applicable, you will need to cease all nicotine use several weeks before your procedure and throughout your recovery.
We ask that you take time away from work and other activities to focus on healing and arrange transportation home from your procedure, especially if you are traveling for medical tourism in Tijuana. Finally, please secure any prescriptions you may need for your recovery ahead of time.

Weight Loss Procedures in Tijuana
Gastric Balloon
A gastric balloon is a device that helps patients feel more satiated after consuming smaller portions. The device is a silicone or polyurethane balloon filled with gas or saline. It is placed into the stomach to help limit how much food can be consumed. Gastric balloons only remain in place for up to six months before removal, but they can reduce up to 15% of one’s total body weight. (2)
This procedure will begin with the insertion of an endoscope, or a long tube with a camera attached, to allow the surgeon to view the inside of the stomach. This is to ensure it is empty and in good health. They will then insert the deflated balloon through the patient’s mouth and guide it to the proper placement. Once placed, they connect a tube to the balloon to inflate it to its appropriate size. After six months, the bariatric surgeon will use another endoscope to carefully deflate the balloon before removing it.
Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve surgery, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is one of the most common bariatric procedures. This procedure involves removing up to 80% of the stomach to reduce its overall size, which reduces the amount of food it can hold. The adult stomach can hold up to approximately 4 liters of food and drink. After a gastric sleeve procedure, the stomach can hold up to 0.8 liters, or approximately 27 ounces.
When performing a sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon will create multiple small incisions around the abdomen. They will insert thin, long rods with cameras called laparoscopic probes to help get a clearer visual of each patient’s stomach. Portions of the stomach containing ghrelin, the hunger hormone, are meticulously removed to help reduce each patient’s appetite. They will then shape the remaining portions of the stomach into a sleeve before stapling it shut and closing incisions. (3)
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and modifies a patient’s digestive path. During this procedure, surgeons reconnect the small intestine to the stomach so that digestion primarily occurs in the small intestine. Gastric bypass is a highly effective procedure, with patients typically experiencing 60% to 70% of excess body weight loss and improvements in weight-related conditions.
The surgeon performs this procedure by making several small incisions in the abdomen before inserting laparoscopic probes. They will trim the stomach tissue to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach. This pouch will become the “new stomach” and hold about 1 ounce of food or drink. The small intestine is then disconnected and reconnected to the new stomach. (4) This allows food to bypass the stomach in the body and helps patients feel more satisfied after eating smaller portions.
Post-Weight-Loss Procedures in Tijuana
Liposuction
Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but it doesremove stubborn deposits of fatty tissue from around the body after achieving their weight loss goals. Liposuction is highly popular worldwide because of its effective ability to tone and contour areas, including the chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, and the area above the breasts.
When performing liposuction, your surgeon will create a small incision near the treatment area. They then inject a tumescent solution containing saline, adrenaline, and a local anesthetic to help minimize bleeding, further numb the treatment area, and swell the fat cells, making them easier to remove.
After this, they will insert a liposuction cannula and move it back and forth to help suction out the fat cells, permanently removing them from the body.
Post-Bariatric Surgery
Our post-bariatric surgeries help address physical changes after significant weight loss. Many patients find that their skin will not retract, often hanging loosely around the body. Others often have persisting stubborn fat. Our surgeons can perform various contouring procedures, such as the facelift, breast lift, extended tummy tuck, and full-body lift, to help each patient restore their figure after weight loss.
Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck is a body-contouring procedure that addresses excess tissue around the midsection. Also known as abdominoplasty, this procedure is greatly beneficial after pregnancy or significant weight loss to help strengthen the abdominal muscles and create a more contoured silhouette.
The surgeon will create an incision from hip to hip, just below the bikini line, for minimal visibility. They will then strengthen and tighten abdominal muscles while removing excess skin, fat, and other tissue from around the abdomen to create a smoother and more defined figure. If needed or desired, they may also reshape and reposition the navel.
Recovery
Your recovery timeline will vary depending on the type of weight loss procedure you undergo. However, you will need to take time away from work to focus on your recovery. During your consultation, you will receive a set of detailed post-operative instructions to help you understand what to expect after your specific procedure.
