Gastric Bypass Tijuana

Losing weight can be a challenge, especially when other methods for weight loss have been ineffective. Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight can be made even more difficult with conditions such as diabetes. When it comes to finally shedding the weight and improving your health, a bariatric bypass may be an ideal solution. Our Bariatric Surgery Center surgeons are committed to guiding patients along their weight loss journeys. Learn more about bariatric bypass surgery below.

Procedure

Gastric bypass surgery is a medical weight loss procedure that is designed to modify the digestive system by reducing the size of the stomach to that of a small pouch. A smaller stomach means you will consume much less food. Additionally, this new, smaller stomach is connected to the small intestine. Doing so ensures that food entering your digestive system bypasses most of the stomach, helping your body absorb fewer calories in the process. This procedure is often performed via laparoscopy, a safe and effective technique that is associated with reduced downtime. Several small incisions are made in the abdomen, and the procedure is performed through these incisions.

The lasting changes to your digestive system can help improve a number of medical conditions, in addition to obesity. These include:

  • Diabetes
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Chronic acid reflux
  • High blood sugar
  • High cholesterol
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Sleep apnea

Ideal Candidate

If you are considering bariatric surgery at Cosmetic & Bariatric Surgery Center, the first step is scheduling your consultation with one of our surgeons. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to share your needs and goals. One of our surgeons will then assess your fitness for surgery, ensuring that you receive the safest, most effective treatment for your case. Generally, gastric bypass surgery candidates share the following characteristics:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more. Patients with BMIs of 35 may also be eligible for surgery if they also have medical conditions related to obesity, such as hypertension.
  • A history of unsuccessful weight loss attempts. This also includes patients who have lost weight in the past but have regained it.
  • A desire and commitment to lose weight and keep it off.

Diet

Gastric bypass recovery and diet go hand in hand. This procedure is an effective tool for weight loss, but it requires you to permanently change your relationship with food.  You will be provided with a tailored guideline filled with instructions on activities and foods to avoid, how to avoid complications, and other important information to ensure a successful recovery. Right after surgery, you will need to stick to a liquid diet. At first, you may experience fatigue as your body heals and adjusts to the reduction in calories from your new diet. After a few weeks, you may be cleared to consume soft foods. Our team will help you transition back into solid foods when you are deemed ready.
