About Hair Transplantation

Hair loss is a common concern that affects both men and women worldwide, with the most common cause being androgenic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern hair loss. (1)

Hair loss can be caused by many factors, including genetics, age, and hormones. While several hair restoration treatments exist, Dr. Gutierrez offers both the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedure and the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure to help achieve new hair growth.

Follicular unit transplantation is a method of hair restoration that involves excising a strip from the back of the head. The strip contains hundreds of hair follicles that are then separated and reimplanted into predetermined areas on the scalp. On the other hand, follicular unit extraction is a minimally invasive method of hair restoration that harvests individual follicular units with a punch before the follicles are prepared for replantation. Both methods are highly effective and offer their unique advantages. Dr. Gutierrez will determine the best hair restoration method for each patient at their consultation.

Benefits of Hair Transplantation

There are many benefits patients may experience after undergoing a hair transplantation. These benefits include:

  • Natural Results: The transplanted hair is placed in a way that mimics the hair’s natural growth pattern, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the hairline.
  • Permanent Solution: The results of hair transplantation are long-lasting since the transplanted hair follicles are resistant to the hormone responsible for hair loss.
  • Minimal Downtime: Patients can return to work within several days, especially when undergoing an FUE procedure.
  • Low Maintenance: Once the hair follicles have started growing, there is no special treatment needed for maintenance.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Many patients experience an increase in their self-esteem and self-image after restoring their hair.

Candidates

The ideal candidates for hair transplantation are those experiencing excessive shedding or thinning hair around the scalp.

Candidates for FUE

Patients may be recommended for FUE hair transplantation if they have mild to moderate levels of thinning and are interested in a less invasive procedure. Patients with limited donor hair, as well as those with shorter hair, are recommended for this method as it offers both a shorter healing time and less visible scarring. (2)

Candidates for FUT

Individuals recommended for FUT are those experiencing more significant levels of hair loss, as well as those who tend to wear their hair longer. Patients who require a larger number of grafts are also recommended for a FUT procedure.

All candidates interested in hair transplantation should be in good overall health and hold realistic expectations regarding the outcome of their procedure. Dr. Gutierrez will determine each patient’s candidacy for both hair restoration procedures at their consultation.

Personal Consultation

Patients are asked to attend a personal consultation with Dr. Gutierrez before scheduling their hair transplantation. This meeting is not only a chance for our team to get to know each patient, but to understand how we can help them best. Dr. Gutierrez will discuss the details of the procedure with each patient before collecting more information on their medical history, scalp concerns, and desired results. An evaluation of the scalp will also be performed.

Dr. Gutierrez will recommend either the FUT or FUE procedure based on each patient’s needs, tailoring aspects to help address their concerns. Pre-operative and post-operative instructions will also be provided, as well as an all-inclusive quote.

Virtual consultations are also offered for international patients who are interested in medical tourism for cosmetic surgery.

Preparation

Each patient will receive a set of instructions at their consultation, guiding them on how to best prepare for their hair transplantation. For most patients, preparation for a hair transplant procedure is quite minimal. Dr. Gutierrez may ask patients to temporarily discontinue the use of certain medications and supplements, especially those with blood-thinning properties. Those who smoke should cease the use of nicotine several weeks before their appointment, fully refraining from use until healed. (1)

Logistically, transportation home from the procedure should be pre-arranged, in addition to time away from work and other social activities.

Hair Transplantation Procedure

All of our hair transplantations are performed in our state-of-the-art facility on an outpatient basis, meaning patients will be released home to rest on the same day as their appointment. Each procedure can last between three to seven hours and is performed under sedation to ensure each patient’s comfort.

FUE Procedure

Dr. Gutierrez will begin the FUE hair transplantation by shaving the sides or back of the scalp for extraction. A circular micropunch tool will then be used to extract individual follicular units from the targeted donor area, with the most viable follicles taken and preserved in a solution. Dr. Gutierrez will then make multiple, small incisions in the scalp, where he intends to place the grafts, ensuring the placements replicate the patient’s natural hair growth patterns. The follicles are then placed into these recipient sites very carefully before the incisions are closed.

FUT Procedure

The FUT method begins with trimming each patient’s hair at the back of the scalp. Dr. Gutierrez will then surgically remove a strip of hair follicles from the back of the scalp, carefully closing the incisions with sutures.

Dr. Gutierrez will meticulously collect the hair follicles from the excised tissue, dissecting them under a microscope to separate the follicular units from each other. These units can contain anywhere between one to four hairs. (3) Incisions are then made into the patient’s scalp in the same directions as their natural growth pattern. Dr. Gutierrez will place the extracted follicles into these placements to ensure a seamless transition into the hairline and natural-looking results.

Recovery

Each recovery timeline will vary from patient to patient, depending on whether they are recovering from an FUE procedure in comparison to an FUT procedure. Dr. Gutierrez will provide each patient with a set of personalized post-operative instructions to help guide them through their healing. Patients should ensure they follow each instruction to facilitate a smooth recovery and the most ideal outcome.

Generally speaking, patients will need to take time away from work and other social commitments to focus on healing. Patients are recommended to rest for several days in a reclined position. For the first one to two days, the grafts will be easy to accidentally remove, but after the three- to four-day mark, this will be much more difficult as the follicles start to take root. A crust will form on the transplanted hair for the first several days of healing but often falls off around seven to ten days following the procedure. Any discomfort experienced throughout healing can be managed through the use of prescribed pain medications, and scarring will fade gradually on its own.

Results of Hair Transplantation

The full results of each patient’s hair transplant procedure can be seen after 12-18 months, once their hair has had a chance to start growing. There will be a noticeable improvement in the thickness and density of hair, along with natural-looking results that seamlessly blend in with their hairline. The results of each patient’s hair transplantation are permanent, allowing patients to enjoy their luscious locks for years to come!
