About Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures and is one of the most personalized and complex procedures in medicine. Unlike other cosmetic procedures like lifts or filler injections, Dr. Gutierrez has to create a proportionate nose with a natural appearance by altering the patient’s cartilage. He also has to take precautions to preserve the facial muscles’ natural expressions and movements. (1)
Rhinoplasty procedures also have applications beyond improving one’s appearance. These procedures are regularly performed on patients with deviated septums or nasal obstructions that can complicate normal breathing. (1)
If you are experiencing anxiety and social withdrawal from the shape and appearance of your nose or have difficulty with nasal functions like breathing, smelling, or tasting, then a rhinoplasty can drastically improve the quality of your life.
Schedule your free consultation with Dr. Gutierrez today and begin planning your new nose.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence. The nose is the face’s focal point and plays a primary role in facial symmetry and perceived beauty. (1) While the latter can be subjective, sculpting a nose you are proud of means taking pride in your appearance and will help you live a life full of happiness with newfound beauty.
For patients suffering from nasal defects or recovering from injuries, rhinoplasty can offer the opportunity to relieve their frustrating ailments. Deformed noses also make breathing harder and hinder other olfactory senses like scent and taste. (2)
Candidates
The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people looking for improvement in the shape of their nose. Because of its complexity, patients must think critically and realistically about their outcomes. Patients who respond best to the procedure are young and intelligent, relatively secure in their overall appearance, listen to Dr. Gutierrez, and express their concerns. (1) Patients should be in good health for the procedure to minimize complications during recovery.
Rhinoplasties are normally only performed on patients whose nose has reached its full development, with some exceptions depending on medical severity. This is usually 15 years old for women and 17 for men. (1)
Personal Consultation
Rhinoplasties are complex, personalized procedures, so no two are the same. During your initial consultation, Dr. Gutierrez will ask you to provide details about your medical history and medications. You will then discuss what you would like your nose to look like, and he will evaluate your nasal and facial structures to plan your procedure. During this time, it is important to voice any concerns you have about your procedure and listen to Dr. Gutierrez. Clear communication is vital to a successful rhinoplasty, and any misunderstandings can lead to undesirable results. If you are ready to discuss your options and explore life with a new nose, then schedule a consultation today and begin planning your procedure.
Preparation
You can reduce your risks of complications by closely following Dr. Gutierrez’s instructions both before and after surgery. During your preparation and consultation(s), he will explain the procedure’s techniques, the anesthesia employed, where the procedure will be performed, and more. You will also discuss your medical history to review prior procedures, medications, and any conditions you have that may cause complications. We strongly recommend making arrangements for a ride home, especially if you will be crossing the border.
Procedure
Rhinoplasties are performed differently depending on the objective of the procedure, but most will either be open or closed rhinoplasties. With open rhinoplasty, Dr. Gutierrez will make an incision between the nostrils on the columella to lift the skin and see the structures inside. This method offers better access and visibility and leads to stronger, longer-lasting, stable results. However, this method can lengthen the procedure and recovery times. (3)
Closed rhinoplasty avoids external incisions by making surgical corrections through the nostrils. While this eliminates scarring and makes for a faster procedure, Dr. Gutierrez will not have as much access or visibility to certain areas of the nose. Closed rhinoplasty is better for procedures that do not require delicate sculpting or complex reshaping, like septum correction or bone protrusion. (3) The methods employed in your procedure will depend on your rhinoplasty goals.
Schedule a consultation with Dr. Gutierrez to make your rhinoplasty plan.
Recovery
Most rhinoplasty patients are walking within two days, and able to return to school or sedentary work within a week following surgery. It will be several weeks, however, before you are fully healed. Dr. Gutierrez will give you more specific instructions on how to care for your new nose, but all patients are recommended to avoid hitting or rubbing their nose, and swimming. For patients prone to seasonal allergies, we recommend wearing a surgical mask and regularly (multiple times per day) taking antihistamine medications to prevent sneezing. Use light pressure when washing your face and avoid using makeup. Patients who wear glasses are recommended to switch to contact lenses for up to seven weeks. Dr. Gutierrez will require follow-up appointments with either himself or your primary care physician in the months after your procedure to monitor your recovery.
Results
The final results of a rhinoplasty may not be apparent for a year or more, but you will gradually see a change as your healing progresses. (1) Patients should remain understanding and tolerant of the delayed arrival of their results. It is tremendously important for both you and Dr. Gutierrez to understand the goals and likely outcomes of your procedure.
