Preparation
You will receive a list of preparatory guidelines to follow after your consultation. Proper preparation is vital to ensuring a safe procedure and optimizing your results. Patients who smoke or use other forms of nicotine will be asked to abstain before and after their treatment. Patients should also avoid alcohol and any blood-thinning medications or supplements. Please arrange for someone to drive you home after your procedure. Additionally, please take sufficient time away from work and social obligations to recover.
Procedure
On the day of the surgery, you will arrive at our facility, where you will receive general anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Some patients will receive local anesthesia with sedation instead. Typically, a breast lift takes approximately two to three hours, depending on the complexity of the procedure and the techniques used. (2) Dr. Gutierrez will make incisions on and around your breasts. These incisions can be periareolar, which is around the nipple; vertical, which descends from the nipple to the base of the breasts; “lollipop,” which combines both of these; or “anchor,” which adds another curved incision to the base of the breast. (2) After making incisions, Dr. Gutierrez will remove excess tissue to reduce the degree of sagging. Some breast lifts involve muscle tightening to support the elevated position of the breast. (2) If the nipples require repositioning, Dr. Gutierrez can place them in the optimal location. Once all necessary corrections are made, he will close your incisions, and you can begin your healing process.
Recovery
You will receive detailed instructions for recovery care and resuming your normal activities. After your procedure, you will wear an elastic bandage or a surgical bra over gauze dressings. Your breasts will be bruised, swollen, and uncomfortable for a couple of days, but the pain should not be severe. Any discomfort you do feel can be relieved with medications prescribed by Dr. Gutierrez.
Within a few days, the bandages or surgical bra will be replaced by a soft support bra. You will need to wear this bra at all times for three to four weeks over a layer of gauze. The stitches will be removed after a week or two.
If your breast skin is dry following surgery, you can apply an approved moisturizer several times a day. Be careful not to tug at your skin in the process, and keep the moisturizer away from the suture areas.
You can expect some loss of feeling in your nipples and breast skin caused by the swelling after surgery. This numbness usually fades as the swelling subsides over the next six weeks.
Healing is a gradual process. Although you may be walking and more active in a day or two, do not plan on returning to work for a week or more, depending on how you feel. Avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks.
Results
